Round 2 - Albury
posted 9th April 2008 Hot, HOT, HOT!!
Heading down to Albury the word was out, for the forecast several days out indicated it would be warm — about 38 degrees warm!!
If you weren’t Endurance Racing it’d be bloody perfect! But we are and that’s why a good number of committed teams made the 6 hour journey to Round 3 of the Australian Endurance Championship.
Practice was fun and, you guessed it, HOT!
Team karts of Pazzesco and Dynamite topping the table followed by Mariners and Road Runner.
Qualifying saw the top five karts covered by a mere two tenths of a second. Four Sale after a couple of days spent trying to get things right came outta nowhere to claim pole position. Mariners were as quick as they looked, taking second. Road Runner always close in third followed by Dynamite, Blind Men Racing in their new BRM and Pazzesco.
Race one after an early safety car period was a tight affair. Mariners, Dynamite and Road Runner couldn’t be separated until Dynamite earned themselves a couple of stop go penalties and Mariner’s relentless pace began to shake Road Runner. Baby Bonus were fast and Blind Men Racing blistering.
In B grade WAR Racing’s speed across three drivers cannot be matched! They circulated all day with the outright leaders. In the process they dominated B and took the win from Ghetto and Ya Gotta Wanna who also showed a good turn of speed.
Mariners took out the A division followed by Road Runner and Dynamite. Baby Bonus accrued another bag of solid points in fourth, Blind Men Racing in their new outfit beat Buildline home by under seven seconds for 5th.
Day 2 — and there was a carby session in the much appreciated pleasant early morning 20 degree temperatures.
Most A grade teams were quick in the conditions. In B grade, Team Canberra were second quickest (behind WAR) followed by C&I who’d had some issues on Day 1.
Day 2 saw an even closer battle up front with two of the lead karts from the day prior (Mariners and Road Runner) chasing Dynamite for four hours, always remaining within a few seconds. Buildline with a return to form in behind the lead bunch as well as Blind Men Racing!
In B grade WAR (B grade my ass) were unbeatable again coming home in 1st place. They were also the 4th team (outright) to finish on the lead lap. Ya Gotta Wanna and Ghetto did a great job again finishing a close 2nd and 3rd. That close all weekend in fact, they tied for overall points for the round.
One of the fastest karts toward the end of the day was Toynton finishing 4th in B, who also were awarded the “tough man” award for the weekend! One driver vomited before jumping in for a stint and the other (dad) vomited during his stint and soldiered on! GOLD!
Team C&I found a heap of speed as the weekend went on and will be a force in B grade sometime soon. Ice Tech also appeared very competitive at times.
It will be interesting to see how the points pan out after this one! Newcastle is next, a highly anticipated round that can make or break!
