The TEKA Engine Log Book is pre-filled with the engine and seal numbers.
Pre-Race Scrutineering
TEKA Engine Log Books, one for each engine, must be presented at Pre-Race Scrutineering and when requested by AKA Scrutineers.
Rebuilding & Resealing
B&S Animal engines can be taken to any engine builder and rebuilt to standard specifications. Full AKA homologated B&S Animal specifications are available on the TEKA website. (soon) TEKA currently have (3) nominated B&S Motorsport Dealers that are fully equipped to rebuild, service and seal Animal engines.

Fitzgerald Mowers 9 Fitzgerald St, Windsor, NSW 2756 Ph: (02) 4577 3401 |
Engine Builders are required to fill out the service part of the Engine Log Book, including the type of service performed and any parts required. Engine Builder contact details must also be added to Log Books as part of its service. It is the competitor’s responsibility to insure that Engine Log Books are filled out correctly.
Only a TEKA sanctioned Engine Sealer or nominated B&S Motorsport Dealer may seal Animal engines. To ensure fairness for all competitors an engine sealer may NEVER drive or compete in a kart that is powered by an engine they have sealed. Furthermore, no Animal engines can be sealed by the same Engines Sealer more than (2) consecutive times.
Inspections
As per AKA rule 51.16 TEKA reserves the right to take away and inspect any Animal engines at the completion of an event. Competitors are advised to carry their original B&S engine boxes to race meets to assist TEKA with transportation. The corresponding Engine Log Book must accompany each engine as part of the technical inspection process. Competitors will receive a receipt for each engine taken and advised of a time and place to attend the technical engine inspection. After an engine passes inspection - unless otherwise agreed with the competitor - engines are returned re-sealed at no cost to the competitor. Inspection details and new seal numbers are recorded into the Engine Log Book. Please Note: Mandatory TEKA technical inspections and subsequent re-sealing does not reset an engine’s consecutive engine sealing count.
Anomalies
In the event that an engine is deemed to be illegal the competitor will be disqualified from the event. The AKA Technical Scrutineers decision is final.
posted 21 Aug 08 Questions and Answers - Part 2
What is the current gearing being used on the CT kart?
Currently the CT kart is using the same clutch with a rear sprocket of 72 teeth. Given the Animals differing power characteristics this current gearing, so far, has been the best match for our endurance tracks. However further testing will be performed to determine the ideal final gearing including consideration for speed parirty with Honda powered karts.
What are the details regarding warranties?
There is no warranty for racing equipment, however B&S give warranty on their components provided that the failure of such component was due to a production or design fault. This warranty is not a new thing all reputable companies dealing in performance equipment do this. Honda do not give ANY warranty at all on any engine that has the governor removed or the engine is used for any other purpose than what it was designed for that is a stationary pump engine. The B&S Animal is designed for racing and as such B&S have policies regarding race engines.
Are risks in the fuel bay increased with the Animal engine?
Back fire through the carby is a risk, but its not the sole domain of a B&S Animal, all engines being restarted hot do have this risk. (that is why refuelers’ are in proper PPE and carry fire extinguishers and are trained to use them and refueling bays are away from any other hazards) If the case of a backfire on a Honda the fuel being spit up back through the carby catches the air cleaner alight and this is in a sealed air box, which makes it harder to gain access with the extinguisher. With a foam or paper exposed filter no such problem exist.
The Animal carby has an overflow, how does this work?
Yes there is a float bowl vent tube that is terminated in a catch tank which is an AKA approved fuel overflow bottle. This item is not included in the engine package. These items are cheap and easily installed.
Are the Animal foam air cleaners effected by Water?
At the Newcastle round this year it was the wettest that we've ever experience and a lot of Honda engines suffering from water ingestion and stalls, this comes from water being flicked up from the rear wheels into the air box going through the air cleaner and into the carby. The B&S equipped kart did not suffer any such problems, due to a plastic sleeve being installed over the air cleaner. The engines were sent back to B&S after the Newcastle round and Chris from B&S reported after an internal inspection that no evidence of water was found inside the engines.
What about the costs of spare parts, how do these compare to the Honda?
On the B&S racing web site www.briggsracing.com their is a full list of spare parts and their prices along with a lot of information on engine set up and maintenance. There is also a forum on the Animal engine so ideas and set up information can be exchanged. This information is publicly available, teams can compare prices easily using this information.
The CT kart has had exhaust problems recently, what's the story here?
The Animal engine as shipped by B&S USA does not include an exhaust. For this reason and at TEKA's request the standard Intek exhausts are being used, this is in part, due to its availability and standardisation of the part. So far it has shown a weakness and TEKA are now working with B&S on getting new parts from the USA to supply TEKA. We'll continue to do further product testing in race conditions to be sure that the final homologated product is as good and as reliable as we can get.
Where do I go to get my engines rebuilt / freshened?
B&S policy is that they have approved and trained motorsport dealers through out Australia dealing with all of B&S racing equipment. Norwest mowers are just 1 of 3 dealers within the Sydney Metro area, and as part of their Motor Sport project they will be trained by B&S to the rules and regulations of TEKA’s endurance racing engine specifications as will all approved B&S motor sport dealers in NSW. In time B&S dealers Australia wide will be trained, this gives our class the chance to grow and become truly a national class.
How do we deal with speed disparity between the Honda and Animal karts?
All classes of motorsport have to deal with speed disparities and differences in driver skills. Drivers are expected to use common sense when dealing with slower and faster karts. TEKA's track record here is excellent and a credit to all TEKA drivers and the AKA officials that run our events. Based on data collected to date, the difference between B&S Animal and the top Honda with the same kart and same standard of drivers was 1.5 sec a lap at Eastern creek. The difference between the top Honda and the slowest Honda was 5 sec a lap. This is really more of a driver skill question than an engine performance one. Changing rules to allow increased power or speed from Honda engines would only help to expand the gap between fastest and slowest drivers.
We hope this has answered our members question regarding the proposed induction of the B&S Animal. It is great we have members asking questions, we want all members to be fully informed.
If you have further question please contact the TEKA committee.
